Tackling Global Developmental Delay - one mums perspective

Developmental delay is when milestones are not met at the expected ages. It is ongoing, not a slight or temporary lag. Delay can happen in motor, language and social skills - or more than one area, when it is classified as Global Developmental Delay. There are loads of websites that can give you a guide to these milestones, with your health centre, GP or pediatrician being your best bet if you are concerned.

"Not knowing" was the most horrific time for me! Listening to a well meaning mum informing me "My child did not do this until.. my child did not do that until..." grated at my natural instinct.  Faced with the words "Global Developmental Delay", my world seemed to shatter in an instant, seeing other children flourish seemed to make the ride rougher.

As a parent, you have every right to be scared when things are not going as you planned.  Some kids with developmental delay catch up, some have underlying causes as to why they are falling behind - some causes can be rectified and some cannot.  It is really important to investigate why this is happening to your child & to feel that you are in control of that process.

If you know or think that something is not right - you can really benefit from talking to someone about it!

I hope that  this site can generate interest from other parents & carers who are in the Global Developmental Delay spin cycle, or who have been there, to create a useful support network & equal rights for those with no diagnosis.
